Gunilla Backman, MSc, MA, is health advisor (specific focus on health systems and the right to health) for conflict and post-conflict countries at the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency. She is also a doctoral student at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, where she is majoring in health systems, the right to health, and post-conflict countries. Prior to her present post, she worked as senior research officer to Paul Hunt, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Health (2002–2008). Gunilla has also spent over ten years living and working in fragile states and post-conflict countries, including Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, El Salvador, the Republic of Nauru, East Timor, and Guatemala, where she held health management and coordination positions with WHO, UNDP, UNFPA, Médecins Sans Frontières, and the International Organization for Migration. Her teaching, research, and publications focus mainly on the right to health, health systems, and mental health, with a specific interest in fragile states and post-conflict countries. She holds post-graduate degrees in health service management (London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine) and human rights (University of Essex).
