John Whitlam graduated from the University of Cambridge in 1984 with a degree in Modern Languages and immediately got involved in publishing, in the area of bilingual dictionaries. He spent ten years in London working on a variety of dictionaries and other language-learning materials before moving to Brussels in 1993 to take up a job as a translator for the European Economic and Social Committee. During this time, he also studied Japanese and, in 2003, completed an MA in Advanced Japanese Studies. After moving to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 2004, he now works as a freelance author, lexicographer and university lecturer.
